"Taking Goalkeeping Outside the Box"
Taking the Goalkeeping Position to the next level.

Welcome to the Keeper Corner and "Taking Goalkeeping Outside the Box". This section is going to act as place for goalkeepers to learn new techniques, tactics, and all sorts of other goalkeeping "stuff".  The goal is to help keepers learn in a new exciting form outside of just training within the club.  We will analyze matches, have drills to do at home, talk about fitness and nutrition, and everything in between.  I encourage you to participate as much as possible and push yourself to that next level.

Winter brings snow but also our foundation.
Footwork, Tim Howard, and Kasey Keller.

Its that time of the year again!  Like it or not the winter months are upon us in Eastern PA.  As beautiful as it may be, it is impossible to play a game on a snow-covered field in the middle of November through March.  However, this does not mean we can’t continue our growth as goalkeepers throughout these winter months.  In fact as a goalkeeper we can almost become better in these coming months!

So how is it that we can get better when there is a foot of snow outside and it is 20°?  One word for you: footwork, footwork, and footwork.  The foundation of our position is proper footwork and the “indoor” season provides the perfect time to improve upon our footwork.  It tends to get lost in the shuffle, but footwork is the most essential key to us being effective goalkeepers.  In other words, without proper footwork we are going to let in a lot of goals.

I always tell goalkeepers that our foundation for our position is our footwork and without it we are nothing.  It’s true.  Every single little, big, and in between aspect of the position relies on great footwork.  It’s essential from shot stopping, crosses, diving, distribution, and everything in between.

So here is the first little exercise that I put forth to you.  In the next week make it a point to do at least 30 minutes of footwork on two of our “off” days.  You don’t need cones, balls, or any equipment.  All you need is you, a strong work ethic, and some household items.

The footwork stuff gets us to one hour for the week when we do it two days for 30 minutes.  That leaves us with 3 more hours to fill.  So the next assignment is to watch Tim Howard on Saturday when his Everton squad takes on Newcastle United at 8:30 am on ESPN2.  When watching the game take special note of Tim’s footwork. I would like you to write down three things you notice about his footwork.  Finally, I would like you to read this article about Kasey Keller one of the best, if not the best, goalkeepers to ever play for the USA. What game is he most remembered for? I will give you a hint: It’s against the country that has the most World Cup titles.

Send me your three things about Tim Howard and the answer to the Kasey Keller question as well as a photo doing the footwork stuff.  Be sure to include your name and team information so we can keep track of who is doing what. Talk with you next week!
